Emigrata in Sud Africa.

I miei coetani mi chiamavano “terrona” in modo molto dispregiativo.
Certu gia’ senti a mancanza di so padri”.

THE FIRST TO EMIGRATE:

The day finally arrived when papa’ and Zio had to leave. They were catching the afternoon train to Messina and from there to Brindisi where they would sail on the “Gerusalemme” an old war ship turned passenger.
Us children where at Nonna’s house where Zio and Zia also lived with their two little girls, Aged four and two and who were too small to understand the importance of the moment. The fact that their father was leaving for a far off country of which very little was known, didn’t seem important to them. They were going to “Dark Africa”. The only things that we knew were the stories of a City of Gold and the many opportunities of work there.
Post war Sicily was a very grim place, were no jobs were to be had and money which had had some value before the war, had no value now. My father had to go to Milan to work,
one thousand or so kilometers away. I had gone with my parents for a while, but was very unhappy there as I was considered a “terrona” a word used by the northerners who looked down on us who came from the south. (This is another story, which I will come back to at
a later stage). I missed my village, the warmth of the people, the sunshine, the sea and my family.
My younger brother and I understood the importance of the great step my father and uncle were taking and were rather subdued whilst my grandmother ranted and raved.
It wasn’t as if I was particularly concerned, as I was used to my father not being present.
He wasn’t there when I was born and I laid eyes on him for the first time after my third birthday, when he returned from prisoner-of-war camp in Germany. After that he was often away for work and therefore I had spent very little time with him, mostly the few months when I had been in Milan with my parents, while my brother stayed in Sicily, looked after by the rest of the family.
While nonna carried on about my father and uncle taking away her grandchild which she wouldn’t be able to enjoy and see growing up, I became bored!
I started playing with an awl that nonna had left on the window-sill, as she had been making holes in some new mattresses. My Zia told me to put it down as I would hurt myself with this, but I, (being always hardheaded), carried on playing, wishing they would get on with it so that we could go to the station. At a certain point nonna’s lamentations became so high and hysterical that I pierced my hand right in the middle of my left palm.
I held back a scream and closed my palm as tightly as could. It was bleeding and I didn’t want anyone to see what I had done. The pain was excruciating but I didn’t turn a hair. I coolly asked for a rag to blow my nose. My younger aunt, Giuseppa, gave it to me and I slinked out of the room so that nobody noticed what I was going. As soon as I got downstairs I put the rag in my hand and closed my palm tightly.
The whole family eventually made their way to the station with bag and baggage. These were taken by “Don Pietro” our only taxi in the village. Half the village was already there to wave these courageous men goodbye and see them off. Finally they boarded the train with all their luggage and good wishes from everyone.
I had tried to be brave and not cry from my physical pain which was great. I had a hole in my hand that was unbearably sore. On seeing everyone else crying, I let out a roar and sobbed desperately to my heart’s content.
Everyone turned to me and said: “Ho! poor thing, look how she is crying for her father. She is going to miss him terribly”.

To be continued...

  • Quanto qui appresso potrebbe sembrare fuori tema ... a prima vista.

    Finiremo emigranti ?
